Stage One 

Homeostasis

First seconds to 3 days

The body responds to rupture of blood vessels by forming a clot in the area to stop blood loss. Injured blood vessels leak fluids, proteins and white blood cells causing localized swelling.

Stage Two 

Inflammation

1-4 days

The immune system gets to work cleaning up injured and damaged materials from the wound site and clearing out any foreign invaders.

Stage Three

Proliferation

2 -21 days

(sometimes 6 weeks)

 

The wound is rebuilt with new tissue made of collagen and extracellular matrix

Stage Four

Remodeling and Maturation

8 weeks - 1+ years
